Starmer takes centre stage in Europe |

| Sunak insists new deal will solve Northern Ireland issues (PA Images) | After being seen for years as the basket case of Europe, largely thanks to Brexit, Britain took centre stage at last week's European Political Community (EPC) summit at Blenheim Palace. Hosted by newly minted prime minister Sir Keir Starmer, European leaders flocked to the plush Oxfordshire meet-up, where the change in attitudes towards the UK was palpable. Sir Keir used the occasion to declare Britain is "back on the international stage", adding that the work has started on deepening cooperation in areas such as illegal migration and supporting Ukraine. As well as European leaders welcoming the election of a remain-backing Labour prime minister, Sir Keir's thumping majority made him flavour of the month among a group whose traditional leading lights are facing political instability at home. With a second Donald Trump term looming, Sir Keir will likely have to play a leading role in ensuring the US keeps up its support for Ukraine. He has promised to work closely with the bloc, "not as part of the European Union, but very much as part of Europe".
