Remarkable rats of Cambodia |
Penny Thomas sees these misunderstood creatures in a whole new light |
Rats have long been the poster child of urban squalor and disease. Yet, on assignment in Cambodia, I find their unfortunate reputation is deeply undeserved. “Rats are a delicacy here,” our local guide Fila says, holding up a barbecued rat from a roadside market in Phum Ou Ta Ki. Fila’s brought us here on our way from Siem Reap to Battambang and encourages our group to try the local delicacies, which also includes barbecued snake. “It’s fine to eat,” he promises. “I wouldn’t let you try anything that can make you sick.” |

A touch of class on Europe cruises |
Michael Ferrante finds an enticing offer sailing one of the world’s most luxurious cruise lines |
Regent Seven Seas Cruises has savings of 20 per cent per guest on many of its all-inclusive luxury voyages to northern Europe and the Mediterranean in 2025. Its European Edition offer spans 46 sailings to many of the most sought-after locales of this made-for-cruising region on new bookings until August 31, 2024. Many of the itineraries in this offer are in the 10 to 14-night range and allow you to dip in and out of a mix of big-name cities and also visit lesser-known gems along the way. | The travel team discuss the charming yet confounding Kingdom of Cambodia |
On this week’s episode, host Stephen Scourfield chats to Penny Thomas and Mogens Johansen about one of their favourite places in South-East Asia: Cambodia. Join the team as they share personal stories from their travels around Cambodia, highlighting the country’s rich culture, history and cuisine. During the show, Penny tells us about a seven-day food tour she did with Intrepid Travel that involved sampling plenty of local delicacies (including rat!). We also hear from Mogens who describes what it is like to stay in the heart of the Cardamon Forest at a luxury glamping resort. And, at the end of the show we’ve included an interview Penny recorded in Battambang with a local guide named Sambat who grew up in Cambodia during the 1970s. |
Pocket rocket video camera | Mogens Johansen discovers DJI’s Osmo Pocket 3 video camera produces professional-looking videos with a minimum of faff |
If you want to create amazing video content from your travels with a minimum of faffing around, DJI’s Osmo Pocket 3 may just be the camera for you. The tiny camera is the choice for many vloggers and content creators, who love it for its compact size, built-in three-axis gimbal, and ease of use. The whole package fits, as the name suggests, in your pocket and because it only weighs only 179g it is great for capturing videos on the run. |
More YOUR SAY on those Kings Park cabins | After three weeks, you still have plenty to say as we publish more of your comments on the Kings Park cabins |
When we published news of the trial of three “fancy dongas” in Forrest Drive, Kings Park, we suggested readers have their say. In the history of this Travel supplement, we have never received such a sustained volume of correspondence on any subject. And so we feel it is our responsibility and duty to continue giving our readers this space, to have your say on this important community issue. The trial of the Heyscape tiny cabins ends on July 28. Breath of fresh air in the big smoke | Jade Jurewicz finds a welcoming oasis and a pair of magic hands at the Novotel Perth Murray Street |
Is your jaw clenched? Are your shoulders around your ears? Is your spine contorted into a momentarily comfortable position? Is your neck bent at an unnatural angle so you can scroll on your phone? If, like me, your answer to the above is a resounding yes, then your aches and pains are likely crying out for some strong hands (and pointy elbows) to knead them away. Perth isn’t a stranger to a massage offering; from Byron Bay-esque wellness retreats in shades of terracotta and burnt caramel to highway haunts with fluorescent lighting and laminated price sheets, there is something for every taste and budget. Keishi Spa, sitting on level 12 of Novotel Perth Murray Street, is one of our newest. While it opened its doors just weeks ago, the spa — owned by Everlyn Zaccagnini — has been pampering its guests for more than 10 years. |
