A 'new dawn' for Trump's shot at the White House |
|
| July 13 will go down in history as the day we almost lost one of the most polarising figures of modern times. Donald Trump escaped death by a whisker or, more specifically, an extraordinarily fortunate turn of the head when 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired a shot at the former president during a Republican rally in Pennsylvania. The assassination attempt was condemned by leaders from around the world and across the political spectrum, as well as by Trump's elusive wife Melania. She joined her husband's rival Joe Biden in calling for unity among her compatriots as they face a new "dawn", whilst also lauding her controversial partner's "passion". No clearer was this passion seen than in Trump's response to the terrifying assault, which left him bloodied but strikingly defiant. Rather than cower following the violent attack, the 78-year-old raised his arm in a fist and cried: "Fight, fight, fight!" The plucky move and iconic image have cemented his status in the eyes of many (including Elon Musk), as a true American hero, and seen him gain a substantial boost in the polls ahead of November's presidential election. Now, having been officially named as the Republican Party's candidate for the race, and having selected a suitably contentious running mate, a bold and bandaged Trump continues his tilt for the White House with more vim and vigour than ever. | Welcome to the Indy100 newsletter | |

| The Titanic – a symbol of hubris and human tragedy – has been a source of fascination for more than 112 years. But, the fact is, the sunken ocean liner was more than just movie fodder or a deep sea explorer's holy grail, it was a very real ship on which more than 1,500 people died. And yet, whilst experts – using the most sophisticated submersible and underwater filming equipment – have found some extraordinary relics from the wreckage, they have never found any skeletons or bones. "I've seen zero human remains," James Cameron, director of the iconic 1997 film, told the New York Times back in 2012. "We've seen clothing. We've seen pairs of shoes, which would strongly suggest there was a body there at one point. But we've never seen any human remains." Given that Cameron has visited and explored the wreck some 33 times (and claims to have spent more time on the ship than the ship's captain), if he hasn't seen any human remains we can assume that there really aren't any there. So why is this? Read more here | |
| To the sci-fi minded, strange lights hovering above Earth can mean only one thing… And yet, when astronaut Matthew Dominick spotted eerie flashes of colour in the planet's atmosphere, his mind didn't jump to an alien invasion. Instead, the NASA pro – who is currently spending six months on board the International Space Station (ISS) – took pictures of the dazzling celestial light show, which he knew to be the product of a perfectly natural, but mysterious, phenomenon. | |
| If you only have 100 seconds... | | | Money dysmorphia is alive and well – and many unknowingly suffer from it without even knowing. Social media has a big part to play when it comes to young people and their financial decisions, with some feeling influenced or pressured to live a certain lifestyle due to the world of Instagram. Well now, a study has resurfaced that suggests young people are obsessed with becoming rich. The research, conducted by Qualtrics for Intuit Credit Karma in 2013, described money dysmorphia as: "Having a distorted view of one's finances that could lead them to make poor decisions."
